NYC Sleaze Special: An Interview with 5 Legendary Filmmakers from New York!

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 02:59 PM PDT

Personally, I can hardly think of a better location for a gritty old-school horror flick than the dirty, sleazy and trash-filled streets of New York City in the 70s and 80s with its run-down housing blocks, twisted denizens and overall dark and depressing atmosphere... I cant even explain why, but the shabbier the environment in films like MANIAC, BASKET CAST or DRILLER KILLER looks, the more I freakin love it! Its as if those seemingly disgusting and repulsive places convey a very own, twisted aesthetics that, once you got it, totally blows your mind! To revel in my love for good ol NYC sleaze and pay a little homage to some of my fave horror films of all time, I hooked up with five legendary filmmakers from the Big Apple and asked em to share a couple of anecdotes about their teenage days on 42nd street, their shooting experiences in New York and the role this larger-than-life city played in the makings of some of the biggest cult films of the genre... enjoy!

A third Djinn movie is in the works from Matt Dallmann (whose first feature, The Third Testament, is being distributed by First Look Features. Inside a 5-minute short film was created to help get a feature off the ground. Check it out below. "Imagine for a moment that the lighter you're using to fire up your next cigarette is home to far more than just wick and fluid ... According to the Qu'ran, two creations have free will: humans and Djinn ... Made of smokeless flame, Djinn can be good or evil. One might even take up residence in your Zippo -- any flick of which can change the world in a terrifying instant."
