Hey remember that nine-minutes of footage from Piranha 3D you've been hearing about that was dubbed too hot for Comic-Con? Well a reader who wishes to remain anonymous just sent a bootlegged but decent version of it over to our buds at Bloody Disgusting. Dig on it while you can!

Look for Piranha 3D in theatres on August 20th.

Synopsis
Jaws... lots and lots of jaws. From acclaimed director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA 3D, in the latest eye-popping 3D technology. A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.

Check out the footage below courtesy of Bloody Disgusting.

Film4 FrightFest 2010: Kaboom Out, Damned by Dawn In

A slight change has occurred to the lineup of the UK's popular horror film festival Film4 FrightFest due to the withdrawal of Kaboom by its director Gregg Araki. But no worries; Plan B is now in effect, and writer/director Brett Anstey's Damned by Dawn will be screening in its place.

Here's the skinny straight from the Film4 FrightFest website:

We were keeping Brett Anstey's DAMNED BY DAWN for our special Halloween extravaganza because it's not going to be released in the UK until spring 2011. But we've been given special permission to show this gory Australian goodie in August instead by our friends at Odin's Eye Entertainment, and we couldn't be more pleased. DAMNED BY DAWN concerns a Banshee on the loose and is the nearest thing you'll see to an EVIL DEAD 4, its clear Sam Raimi influences making it a remarkably effective piece of visual spookery. So KABOOM is out and DAMNED BY DAWN is now our 6.30 pm, Sunday, August 29 attraction. We just managed to stop the presses on the programme to make the change, meaning our back-to-glossy-cover brochure will be delivered a day later than usual, and just as importantly before our single tickets go on sale on the 31st of July.

Evil Dead Inspired Aussie Flick Finds Us Damned by Dawn

As for the rest of the fest, read on for an update:

The final guest list is still being confirmed, but we will definitely be hosting Tobe Hooper of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE fame; Eli Roth and THE LAST EXORCISM roadshow; Adam Green, Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris from HATCHET II; A SERBIAN FILM director Srdjan Spasojevic; F director Johannes Roberts and cast members; numerous DEAD CERT celebrities; Gemma Atkinson and Isabella Calthorpe from 13 HRS; AMER co-directors Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani; THE DEAD directors Howard and Jon Ford; WOUND director David Blyth; RED, WHITE & BLUE director Simon Rumley; CHERRY TREE LANE director Paul Andrew Williams; some FANBOY surprises and many other personalities. Oh, and Joe Lynch if he can get away from the set of his latest movie KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM. The VIDEO NASTIES panel discussion will be chaired by journalist and critic Damon Wise and feature Allan Bryce (editor of 'The Dark Side'), Martin Barker (Professor of Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University and author of 'The Video Nasties: Freedom and Censorship in the Arts'), Jake West who created the documentary with Marc Morris, a BBFC representative and a director of a film on the banned list.

Film4 FrightFest 2010: Kaboom Out, Damned by Dawn In

It's our most ambitious FrightFest yet. You will not want to miss a second of the five-day fear fiesta. So see you soon. We can't wait…

Author A.M. Esmonde Has a Blood HungerWe know a lot of our readers are always on the lookout for a juicy new horror novel to sink their teeth into, and we recently learned about A.M. Esmonde's first vampire book, Blood Hunger, for which we're happy to pass along a synopsis and trailer.

Synopsis:
In the year 1477 Baron Wilton Abrahams tracked down the last of the Dracul brothers, Stellan, and on the edge of a snow-covered mountain in Romania, drove a stake into him, which sent Stellan tumbling over the mountain's edge. Meanwhile the brides of the Dracul were forced to flee their ancient castle. Whilst Stellan's body lay frozen, the rest of their kind found themselves caught up in witch hunts and death by the vampire hunter Abrahams.

Over five hundred years later explorer Max Lowe and his team make a discovery, dubbed the 'Ice Prince' find. It is significant enough to put him and girlfriend, Lucia Ferrara, in the media spotlight. However, the world's press are not the only ones interested in the frozen body. Old friends of Stellan, the 'Ice Prince', travel to be reunited.

Iliana and her sisters journey to the United Kingdom upon hearing the news that the 'Ice Prince' had been discovered, ceasing their many years of blood abstinence and unleashing a bloodthirsty terror on humankind. They leave a trail of death from London to the Welsh countryside of the UK.

Blood Hunger follows the fall of the vampire and the Dracul brothers in medieval Europe to their return in the present day. Prepare yourself ... their first bite will be your last!

Dahmer vs. Gacy Wins Award at Action on Film International Film Festival

A film titled Dahmer vs. Gacy doesn't seem the type to be garnering awards at film festivals across the country, but that's exactly what's happening. It just won "Outstanding Cast Performance" at the Action on Film International Film Festival in Pasadena, California, and earlier this year the film also was voted "Audience Choice Award" winner at the Bare Bones Independent Film Fest in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Produced and directed by Ford Austin from a script by Chris Watson and Andrew Rausch, Dahmer Vs. Gacy stars Ford Austin and Randal Malone as Dahmer and Gacy in a slaughter-filled rampage that includes appearances by Harland Williams (Half Baked), Art LaFleur (The Replacements), Steven Adler (Guns 'N Roses), Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Jerry Maren (Wizard of Oz), Bonnie Aarons (Drag Me to Hell), Irwin Keyes (House of 1000 Corpses), Jed Rowen (Acts of Violence), Lee Perkins (Live Evil), Brooke Lewis (iMurders), and many more!

Here's the synopsis: A secret government lab has been trying to create the ultimate killer using the DNA of infamous killers Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy, but there's one big problem: They've escaped! Bloody mayhem stretches across the United States as they go on the ultimate killing spree. Trying to stop the maniacal madness is Ringo, a hick warrior being trained by God, using only a shotgun and a bottle of whiskey. In his road trip to hell, he must first fight off his own demons, not to mention an army of Japanese ninjas! It all leads up to the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN!

Revisit the trailer below, and keep it here for more news on Dahmer vs. Gacy as it comes.

Newly Formed Collider Entertainment Is on a Mission

One more story that fell a bit between the cracks during our coverage of the San Diego Comic-Con came in the form of an announcement at the show that producer/writers Marc Guggenheim and Alisa Tager have formed Collider Entertainment, a company focused on the principle that intellectual property can be developed across multiple platforms for production and global distribution simultaneously.

What does that mean in simple terms? The company will have multiple creators writing and directing stories for film, television, comic books, video games and alternative/new media outlets. The first two projects will originate as comic books and be published by Image Comics:

Utopian by Guggenheim and Tara Butters ("Reaper", "Dollhouse"). The project between Guggenheim and Butters, both of whom are professional writers and are married but have never written together until now, tells the story of what happens when the world's superheroes are rendered obsolete when war, famine and crime suddenly begin to disappear. One hero investigates the source of the newfound tranquility, but his former comrades oppose his efforts to return the world to normal.

The second (and of most interest to Dread Central) title, The Mission by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber ("Red", "Battleship"), is a supernatural thriller about a man who receives instructions from the angel Gabriel to commit murder, but is he crazy or is there really a divine force at work?

Newly Formed Collider Entertainment Is on a Mission

Guggenheim commented, "Collider is founded on the notion that when story drives the idea, unfettered by licensing and outdated business models, the end product is better and, therefore, more commercially viable."

Tager continued, "Our philosophy is that the story drives the idea rather than the medium determining the story. The result is only limited by the imagination of the creator."

The Mission sounds a bit like one of our favorite films, Frailty, so we'll be keeping close tabs on it to see how similar ... or different ... it winds up being.

New Details Surface for Darren Bousman's Ninety

New Details Surface for Darren Bousman's NinetySince its first mention in April one movie we've been keeping a close eye on is Darren Bousman's 3D kill-a-thon Ninety. Any movie looking to deliver nearly one hundred kills in one sitting is fine by us, so we've been waiting patiently to hear more. More has finally come.

According to Devin at CHUD:

"The concept is delightfully simple: 90 kills in a 90 minute movie. It's not real time, but the kills will still be coming fast and furious. The killer is a man who was wrongfully convicted and spent time in jail; when he gets out he decides to get revenge on the hot shit detective who put him in the slammer by killing one person for each of the detective's convictions.

You have to have a way of keeping track of the kills, so at one point the murderer will come into possession of one of those clickers that bouncers use to count how many people have come in the door. With each murder he'll click one down. There will be a couple of mass kills - you have to, otherwise there's no way you could fit the whole thing into 90 minutes - but there will be plenty of standalone goodness as well.

From what I understand this is going to be a gleeful splatter romp, and while I don't want to ruin any of the kills, at least one of them sounds stomach-churning and like nothing I've ever seen before. The movie will be rated R, but I've been led to believe that 90 will be shot with an eye towards a harder, unrated DVD release."

Hit up the above linkage for more. Shooting is scheduled to begin soon in New Mexico. Stay tuned for more as it comes.

It's nearly unfathomable that a movie shot in 3D and not some crappy conversion by the great Joe Dante over two years ago has not been released here in the States. In fact, it drives us pretty friggin' crazy! While we're still waiting for distro news we figured we'd point out that a new quad one-sheet for the flick has debuted online. Sigh.

The Hole, directed by Dante in 3D and starring Teri Polo, Haley Bennett, Bruce Dern, Chris Massoglia, and Nathan Gamble.

Synopsis
"From director Joe Dante comes a family-friendly, 3D thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried in the minds of children. After moving into a new neighborhood, brothers Dane & Lucas and their neighbor Julie discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home. They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and nightmares coming to life, they are forced to come face to face with their darkest fears to put an end to the mystery of THE HOLE."

Every good horror movie needs a good score to accompany it to help bring on the shivers, and today some good news just broke tune-wise for Mauro Borrelli's upcoming spooker Box of Shadows.

From the Press Release
Christopher Young, the musical maestro behind HELLRAISER, has applied his talents to a new box, Mauro Borrelli's BOX OF SHADOWS.

Young also composed the music for THE GRUDGE, GHOST RIDER, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, SPIDER-MAN III, and many other projects both in and out of the horror genre. He loaned his skills to BOX OF SHADOWS as a way to give back to the genre that got him started.

"I watched an early cut of the film and loved what I saw," said Young. "I got my start in horror movies and still love those kinds of films, so I was happy to accept producer Ed Polgardy's invitation to create the main theme for the movie and the evil music box."

BOX OF SHADOWS tells the story of a group of college-age friends who find a mechanical coffin that allows them to experience the world as ghosts. Music plays an important role in the film because the coffin contains a mysterious music box that, when activated, triggers the ghost transformations.

"I only show Chris something if I know it's special, and this movie is," said Polgardy. "We asked him to do the main theme of the film, but I knew he'd he be tempted to create the dark lullaby for the music box as well, because he's always been fascinated with the haunting sounds you can get from those types of devices."

Young developed the main theme and several coffin themes, which are being utilized by the movie's other composer, José J. Herring. Young is currently working on PRIEST for director Scott Stewart and producer Sam Raimi. Director Mauro Borrelli was thrilled to get Young on board, since he has been a fan of his work for many years.

"When I was putting together the music for my last film, HAUNTED FOREST, I had my composer listen to Chris's scores for EMILY ROSE and THE GRUDGE as an example of the kind of sound I wanted," said Borrelli. "So to have Chris actually helping us with this project is really a dream come true."

BOX OF SHADOWS is currently in post-production and slated for release later this year.

It's been a long hard road for everyone's favorite misshapen super hero from New Jersey to get his fifth film released, but as of today we are one step closer to getting our mitts on The Toxic Avenger 5: The Toxic Twins!

From the Press Release:
Troma Entertainment has signed Los Angeles writer Collyn McCoy to ink the 5th iteration of the iconic TOXIC AVENGER series of movies. McCoy came to the attention of Lloyd Kaufman, President of Troma Entertainment and Creator of the Toxic Avenger, by a chance meeting with Josh Olson, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE at Gremlins director Joe Dante's office where both were filming segments of Dante's webseries TRAILERS FROM HELL.

"Collyn's unique talent will do more than justice to Troma's 35-year, no-compromises legacy of shit-disturbing movies of the future!" said Kaufman. "His script will undoubtedly be 100% Grade-A Troma!" McCoy's recent script THE HIGH LIFE (with co-writer Jacob J. Mauldin) is currently being produced by Route One Films, a new film company recently formed by Troma alum Jay Stern and Chip Diggins.

THE TOXIC AVENGER is a seminal film in American film history, and has clearly influenced and inspired many of today's mainstream directors, such as Trey Parker, Eli Roth, James Gunn and Quentin Tarantino. It is perhaps the most beloved title of Troma Entertainment, one of the longest running independent film studios in history (36 years). Since his introduction into the film world, "TOXIE" has become the definitive youth-oriented "cult" monster hero, and is recognized world-wide. Among its many iterations, THE TOXIC AVENGER has spawned a hit off-Broadway musical, Marvel comic book series, four film sequels, a popular Saturday-morning cartoon show, action figures, video games, and is currently being remade into a big-budget, mainstream film by Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman and his team.

Get out your calendars, kids! Three high profile horror flicks have switched dates, and it's time to keep you abreast of the changes. That's a great word, abreast. It sounds naughty but it's not. Sort of like Black Swan. Speaking of which ...

Below you'll find new dates and descriptions for the following:

Black Swan -- New Date: December 1st, 2010
The film centers on a veteran ballerina (Natalie Portman, pictured below) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it's unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions.

The Darkest Hour -- New Date: August 5th, 2011
The latest New Regency-Summit supernatural project starring Rachael Taylor, Joel Kinnaman, Emile Hirsch, and Olivia Thirlby. Chris Gorak will be at the helm of this alien invasion chiller.

Dream House -- New Date: February 18th, 2011
The project, picked up as a spec by David Loucka, follows a family that relocates into what appears to be the ideal residence in small town Connecticut. However, the husband (Daniel Craig) and wife (Naomi Watts) are disturbed to discover that their beautiful new home was the site of another family's slaughter, believed to be at the hands of the husband, who survived.

Mother Had Her Day and Now Dad is Getting Some Love in Troma's Father's Day

There's no doubt that Ike and Addley made their mama very proud in the Eighties in Charles Kaufman's classic slice of sick Mother's Day, and now the fine folks over at Troma are looking to bring mayhem to another parental figure.

From the Press Release:
Troma Entertainment will be producing the upcoming film FATHER'S DAY from powerhouse Astron-6! FATHER'S DAY is scheduled for release in June 2012. FEARnet calls a clip of FATHER'S DAY [see below] "indescribable…utterly depraved!" and says that the film "looks absolutely fantastic!"

FATHER'S DAY should prove an excellent complement to Charles Kaufman's classic film MOTHER'S DAY, distributed by Troma. MOTHER'S DAY was recently remade by Darren Lynn Bousman, Brett Ratner and Richard Saperstein and it is most likely that this will also happen to FATHER'S DAY.

Dig on the clip below but be warned - IT IS VERY NOT SAFE FOR WORK!

Rumor Control: Danielle Harris NOT in The Gathering

Rumor Control: Danielle Harris NOT in The GatheringAh, the Internet. It's home to lots of goodness, but it can also be a source of rumors with no merit. Case in point - a previous story we ran (sourced from Variety of all places) that mentioned Danielle Harris as being signed to appear in a new horror anthology to be directed by Jon Keeyes entitled The Gathering.

Danielle took to her @halloweengal Twitter page and also dropped us a line to let us know that not only is she not signed to the project, but she's never even heard of it. In her words:

I HAVE NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN THE MOVIE "THE GATHERING". Never heard of it and it's all over that i'm signed on!!! NOT TRUE. pass it on!!!!!

Don't think it can get any clearer than that, right?

Hopefully at least some of the original story from July 26th was true, especially the awesome sounding synopsis (below) and the involvement of the likes of Doug Bradley, Udo Kier and William Sadler.

The pic's framing story, "The Storytellers," is set on Halloween night with the devil bringing together Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft and Mary Shelley in a competition to tell the most frightening untold tale with the winner receiving the opportunity to leave purgatory forever.

The anthology's other entries include stories centered on cemeteries, vampires, a possessed dummy, zombies, a runaway daughter and a horror-movie fanatic with a terminal disease.

We'll be keeping our eyes and ears open for more so stay tuned!

Clive Barker Reveals the Release Date for Abarat III: Absolute Midnight

Clive Barker Reveals the Release Date for Abarat III: Absolute MidnightFans of Clive Barker's Books of Abarat have had a long wait since the 2004 publication of Book #2 in the series, Days of Magic, Nights of War, but the author/artist has revealed when we might see Book #3, Absolute Midnight. Unfortunately it's still at least a year or so away.

Barker took to his @RealCliveBarker Twitter account to post the following:

  • Hi to all. A lot of people asked for the release date of ABARAT III. Today I was told it will be September of 2011.
  • There are plans to do signings but we won't have them locked down for a while. As soon I have news.Phil and Sarah will carry it.
  • "Phil and Sarah" of course refers to the keepers of the official Clive Barker website, which is also home to the bit of artwork found below, described as "Clive's painting for Book 3 of Christopher Carrion's grandmother, Mater Motley", as well as this tidbit of info: "Abarat: Absolute Midnight will be black both in sentiment and cover design".

It's a long wait to September, 2011, but at least we know that Books #4 and #5, The Dynasty Of Dreamers and The Eternal, will follow (hopefully) soon thereafter.
