When the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Total Recall came out way back when, it infuriated me. Not because it sucked or anything; in fact it was quite good. What bothered me was that it was released at a time when the MPAA was cracking down on horror, forcing studios to pretty much render genre flicks bloodless, and then this flick comes out and it's violent as hell but it's totally okay because friggin' Arnie was in it! So the question beckons ... will a remake bring the same amount of red?
Guess we'll be finding out soon enough as The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog is reporting that Underworld's Len Wiseman is in negotiations to direct a remake of Total Recall, which was originally helmed in 1990 by Paul Verhoeven.
The film is based on Philip K. Dick's story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale and follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.
